  • In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, POCU honors the many contributions of Indigenous Peoples:

Wilma Mankiller was the first female elected chief of the Cherokee Nation and a staunch supporter and activist for the rights of Native Americans. Wilma Mankiller was born November 18, 1945, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the capital of the Cherokee Nation. She grew up there with her family, before moving to San Francisco as part of a Bureau of Indian Affairs policy that wanted Natives off of subsidized land and instead in jobs in big cities. There, her father was a union organizer at his job. Although this could have something to do with her interest in these issues, she also cites that her resolve grew specifically in 1969, when a group of Native American activists laid claim by “right of discovery” on the penitentiary on Alcatraz Island with the aim to expose Native American suffering. She served as director of Oakland’s Native American Youth Center to prevent Native kids from growing up on the streets, supported efforts against gas and electric companies to keep rights to Native land, and learned skills that she would later take back to her own Cherokee nation. In 1977, Mankiller and her two daughters moved back to Oklahoma, where she founded the Community Development Department for the Cherokee Nation who worked to improve water and housing access, and started projects with certain communities to improve quality of life. In 1985, she was elected as the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation where she served for 10 years, whose population doubled, infant mortality declined, and educational achievement rose under her leadership. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, and her book, Mankiller: A Chief and Her People, was published in 1993. She passed away April 6, 2010. In 2017, she was memorialized in a documentary called "Mankiller".

-the name Mankiller refers to a traditional Cherokee rank

-“Every step I take forward is on a path paved by strong Indian women before me.”

She worked on the P-38 Lightning Fighter Plane and also worked on missile and satellite designs. In retirement, she worked to recruit Native Americans into engineering careers.

  • In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, POCU honors the many contributions of Indigenous Peoples:
Sarah Winnemuca, AKA Thocmectony, was born in 1844 in Nevada. In 1865, while some of the Winnemucca family was away, their band was attacked by the US cavalry, who killed 29 Paiutes, including Sarah's mother and several members of her extended family. Subsequently, Winnemucca became an advocate for the rights of Native Americans, traveling across the US to tell Anglo-Americans about the plight of her people. When the Paiute were interned in a concentration camp at Yakima, Washington after the Bannock War, she traveled to Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress and the executive branch for their release. Her abilities of understanding English, Spanish, and three Native dialects enabled her to become a messenger, interpreter, guide and teacher for imprisoned Native Americans and helped her in being a peacemaker between Native Americans and whites during the Paiute War. In addition, Sarah went on a tour, where she collected thousands of signatures on a petition promising the allotment of reservation lands to Paiutes. This fierce woman dedicated her life to protecting and advocating  for Native people and founded a private school for Native American children in Lovelock, Nevada. There is a statue of her in Emancipation Hall of the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. -  by Addy Lepak

  • It's Wellness Wednesday! This week our Wellness Wednesday Tip is: Gratitude!

    What is it?

Gratitude is a strong emotional response and is a state of thankfulness. Thanking others, thanking ourselves, and identifying positive things in our everyday life in which we are grateful for can help bring positivity in our life.

    Why? Benefits of gratitude:

      • Psychological: Enhancing mood and cultivating  positive emotions and thoughts. Becoming more self aware and aware of our surroundings.
      • Physical: A stronger immune system, and improved sleep schedules and energy.
      • Social: More empathy and stronger communication.

    How?

      • Making a gratitude journal/ list
      • Complimenting yourself or others
      • Sending small tokens/notes of appreciation

This is a great article about the Neuroscience of Gratitude from Positive Pyschology.com. It shares some more tips on how gratitude impacts us and ways we can integrate small practices into our routines. Check it out! https://positivepsychology.com/neuroscience-of-gratitude/
