  • In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, POCU honors the many contributions of Indigenous Peoples:

Wilma Mankiller was the first female elected chief of the Cherokee Nation and a staunch supporter and activist for the rights of Native Americans. Wilma Mankiller was born November 18, 1945, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the capital of the Cherokee Nation. She grew up there with her family, before moving to San Francisco as part of a Bureau of Indian Affairs policy that wanted Natives off of subsidized land and instead in jobs in big cities. There, her father was a union organizer at his job. Although this could have something to do with her interest in these issues, she also cites that her resolve grew specifically in 1969, when a group of Native American activists laid claim by “right of discovery” on the penitentiary on Alcatraz Island with the aim to expose Native American suffering. She served as director of Oakland’s Native American Youth Center to prevent Native kids from growing up on the streets, supported efforts against gas and electric companies to keep rights to Native land, and learned skills that she would later take back to her own Cherokee nation. In 1977, Mankiller and her two daughters moved back to Oklahoma, where she founded the Community Development Department for the Cherokee Nation who worked to improve water and housing access, and started projects with certain communities to improve quality of life. In 1985, she was elected as the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation where she served for 10 years, whose population doubled, infant mortality declined, and educational achievement rose under her leadership. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, and her book, Mankiller: A Chief and Her People, was published in 1993. She passed away April 6, 2010. In 2017, she was memorialized in a documentary called "Mankiller".

-the name Mankiller refers to a traditional Cherokee rank

-“Every step I take forward is on a path paved by strong Indian women before me.”
