The Theater Company will be concocting plans for a busy fall season, and we'd love for you to stay in the loop. If you have even an inkling of thought that you might want to be involved in productions in Fall 2021, make sure you've joined the Theater Company Google Classroom (join link: qszdjdj) before you finish this school year. Announcements on productions and startup meetings for next fall will be posted here across the summer. See Mr. Bechtold if you have any questions.

Krish Poudel, a sophomore at ARHS, is reaching out to you with a request for book donations that will benefit the children and youth groups of the Agape Church community in Westfield. For his Eagle Project, Krish is establishing a library at the Agape Church for the resettled Bhutanese refugee population and all collected books will become a part of this library.
There are over 3,000 Bhutanese refugees resettled in Western Massachusetts, and this project was created with a goal of promoting youth literacy among this population. La Source, the ARHS Bilingual French Newsletter! It is with great honor and excitement that we are sharing this unique pandemic edition of La Source with you. Click here to view our latest edition of La Source. La Source is the ARHS Bilingual French Newsletter that was created 5 years ago by the French Club. Its main goal is to build bridges between the American and the French/Francophone worlds by exposing our school community to the French/Francophone cultures. This year, for the first time, in addition to current news events in the French speaking world, students have used La Source as a platform to showcase the remarkable work they have accomplished throughout this challenging and unprecedented Covid-19 school year. Students would normally showcase their work during the Cultural Show Exhibit at our Annual French Community Dinner. Math Contests Are you looking to do some problem solving over the summer? The math department offers math contests each year. Next year, The Math Olympiad , The American Mathematics Competition and M3C Math Modeling Challenge. For the M3C Challenge, each school is allowed to send 2 teams of juniors and seniors. Up to 8 members on each team and a programmer is a plus. If you are at all interested to be part of the M3C Challenge, please email mudiej@arps. org. The links will lead you to all information and lots of practice problems!
The Environmental Action Club at Amherst High School is organizing the first annual Drive Free Day on June 30th, 2021. On this day members of the Amherst community will go a day without driving in an effort to help our planet. The goal of this event is to raise awareness on how we can all help the environment through small actions everyday. To sign up and get involved visit https://www.amherstaction.org/get-involved . Indigenous people in the US face systematic oppression from government and prejudice in their everyday lives. We are a group of Amherst High School students who over the past month have created a website designed to educate and provide resources related to Indigenous rights in the US. The website includes a variety of educational resources as well as Indigenous run organizations focused mainly on Indigenous climate action and issues faced by Indigenous women. They fight every day to have their voices heard, and it is time we start listening. Check out the website here.

Did you know that 243 million women and girls experience abuse by an intimate partner globally? This number has increased with pandemic isolation. Governments are unintentionally telling survivors to isolate/quarantine with their abusers, and women are stuck. A couple of students are trying to make an impact on this issue using education targeted at the root causes of domestic violence. Check out our website that has resources for survivors, educational articles/excerpts, and so much more. Our Instagram (@arhsendingdomesticviolence) also has good info and updates!

The Environmental Action Club is organizing the first annual Amherst Drive Free Day on June 30th, 2021. On this day community members will go a day without driving to spread awareness on how our daily driving habits have an impact on our planet. To sign up for this event visit amherstaction.org. Meet at the tree on the football field at 2:30 on Tuesday, June 22, for all the information you need to train wisely and prepare for a season of outdoor adventure and camaraderie. Do the right thing! I'm talking you you, ultimate players!

We have three new one-time Alternative Learning Program elective course offerings (Unlike our Chinese, French, Latin, Spanish courses, they will not satisfy world language requirements for colleges).

The History of Rock’N’Roll-ALP

Prerequisite: None
Teacher: Frank Vaissiere

This course will study the history of Rock’N’Roll and the social changes it did bring about in the past 70 years. Students will examine the early musical styles that led to the creation of Rock’N’Roll of the 1950s, the British Invasion of the 1960s, Heavy Metal, Punk Rock, New Wave, Goth Rock, Grunge, and other styles of the twenty-first century. The course will have an emphasis on societal, political, cultural, and sartorial contexts and on the music itself. Students will develop active listening skills and the ability to discuss Rock music through readings assignments, group discussions, oral presentations, writings essays, and tests.

This course meets the needs of high school students, 9-12, beginning the study of Italian. Emphasis is on developing oral proficiency and listening comprehension. Reading and writing skills will be addressed in introductory activities to reinforce oral and listening skills. Cultural aspects of the language will be introduced on an ongoing basis. Homework is to be expected daily.

Did you all know this is the first time the state of Massachusetts will officially recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday! Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. It is also called Freedom Day! All students who are currently enrolled in English classes will examine this Juneteenth Slideshow! which explores so many educational and interactive community events this weekend--all centered around this important day. If you don't have an English class today, please open the slides and learn about the panels, community parties, reception, and civil war events (including about the 54th regiment of black soldiers, some from our area!) happening in OUR town! Teachers may give extra credit if you attend these events (ask!).
