  • Today's Black history Month is notably brought to you by Juliana S.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was part of the Neo-Expressionism art movement in the 80’s, criticizing politics and society through his art. He was born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, where his mother introduced him to art museums at a young age. She continued to encourage his artistic talent, enrolling him in a private school, where he met his best friend and wrote a book with him by age 7. By 11, he was fluent in French, Spanish, and English; at age 13, he was enrolled in the Brooklyn Museum of Art. His artwork grew because of its unconventional style, mixing visuals, poetry, text, and abstraction. At 22, he was the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial, in the New York Museum of American Art. His art featured dichotomies of wealth and poverty, integration and segregation, inner and outer. He criticized colonialism, and supported class struggle. Jean-Michel died at 27, with his work in later years only becoming more valuable. One piece, titled Untitled, sold for $110.5 million, as one of the most expensive art pieces ever bought.
