Anna May Wong was born on January 3, 1905. She was the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood. Anna acted in silent films, television, on stage, and in one of the very first movies made with Technicolor. Wong grew up the second of eight children to Sam Sing and Gon Toy Lee. She attended California Street public schooling, but ended up moving to Chinatown’s Chinese Mission School due to harassment from her peers regarding her race. 1919, Anna May Wong was casted as an extra in a new film called The Red Lantern, where she was asked to carry a lantern in a scene. While this casting wasn’t groundbreaking, it was the beginning of Anna’s acting career. At age 17, Anna landed her first lead role in The Toll of the Sea (1922). The movie was the silent version of Madame Butterfly while being one of the very first films produced in Technicolor. While Anna May Wong was able to gather many roles in her career, she was often casted as a supporting character or the standout “Asian character.” After Wong’s death the Asian-American Arts Awards and Asian Fashion Designers group named annual awards after her.

- On March 17th, students have the day off and some members of the ARHS Yearbook Staff will be available at the high school to take photos from 11am-2pm. Students can stop by to take pictures with friends. Social distancing and masks will be required, hand sanitizer will be available. Parents will be contacted to confirm permission. The Environmental Action Club has partnered with Tree-Plenish to plant trees in the Amherst regional community to offset our school’s yearly paper consumption. Buy trees for yourself or as a gift at www.tree-plenishevents.org/amherst! The deadline for ordering trees is March 24, trees cost $5 each, and we are offering red oak, red maple, and river birch saplings. We are hoping to meet our goal of 230 trees, so tell all your friends! You can also sign up to volunteer for our planting event on April 24 at the website above.
