    • Janet Mock is a New York Times bestselling author, writer, director, producer, TV host and advocate. In 2018, Mock became the first transgender woman of color to write and direct an episode of television and is the first openly transgender woman of color to sign a deal with a major content company. She was born on March 10, 1983, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to an African American father and a Hawaiian mother. After graduating high school, she went to the University of Hawaii at Manoa. During her first year there, she traveled to Thailand to have gender confirmation surgery. Upon graduating in 2004 with a degree in Fashion Merchandising, she attended NYU to pursue journalism. She graduated with her master’s degree in 2006 and began working for People Magazine’s website. In 2011, her life story was published as an article in Marie Claire in response to the high rates of suicide among transgender youth. Unsatisfied with this version, she published her story in her own words, encouraging others to do the same. She represents her many intersectional identities through advocacy, as she continues to break barriers and stigmas and hopes that her creations will “empower people and equip them to tell their own stories.” Read more about Janet Mock in her bestselling memoir, Redefining Realness!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        WRC Women’s History Month presented by Adda Hennessey

    • The Belchertown Justice Collaborative (BJC)- is excited to announce their next community project. “Loud and Proud: Identity, Culture and Community” is a public community centered art project all about celebrating the complex and diverse identities here in town! This project will include two parts--murals painted on electrical boxes in town, and a “Pride Zine” (an online magazine). The BJC is asking community members (*Belchertown and surrounding towns) to submit art, photographs, writing, and materials that they want to see included in a magazine or on a mural. The BJC is open to images and materials created by people of all ages, from an old and important family photograph that represents your culture and community, to a crayon drawing done by a young student reflecting on their own identity and community. Send the BJC art, words, and images that represent the theme of “Loud and Proud: Identity, Culture, and Community,” to you!

The BJC will select finalists, and then the town will have a chance to vote for the images or words they most want to see put on the boxes. This project will be finished and released in June of 2021 as a way to honor the anniversary of the BJC’s first event, and as a way to celebrate queer pride month.

If you want to submit art, fill out this form or email the BJ belchertownjusticecollab@gmail.com. You can also find BJC on Facebook and Instagram (@btownjustice).  Deadline is April 1st.
