  • Dolores Clara Fernandez Huerta was born on April 10th, 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico. She is known as one of the most influential labor leaders and activists of the 20th century as a key leader of the Chicano civil rights movement. Throughout high school Dolores faced discrimination from teachers saying she cheated because her school papers were too well-written, to her own brother being brutally attacked for wearing popular Latino fashion. Dolores went on to receive an associate teaching degree from the University of the Pacific’s Delta College. Huerta taught schools briefly but realized her true passion was to organize farmers and farm workers. Huerta began her career as an activist and led many monumental strikes in her lifetime such as the 1965 Delano Grape Strike. After meeting Cesar Chavez, Huerta and Chavez went on to form the famous National Farm Workers Association (NFWA). Despite facing gender and ethnic bias, Huerta led many successful boycotts and strikes with outstanding results thanks to her organization and activism. Huerta went onto receive many awards including the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award in 1998 as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

  • GenerationQ (ages 14-21)

GenQ is a social and support group for queer, trans, and nonbinary youth. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, their programming has shifted from twice a week, in person, to an online drop in-style setting. Recently, this group has been revamped to better meet the needs of its participants. Below is the current programming.

Mondays: Peer Support & Community Connections | 4-6 pm
This time is for youth to receive assistance from staff and their peers, as well as connect to other organizations in the community. It meets on Zoom and the link can be found here.

Tuesdays: Brave Space Weekly Workshops| 4-6 pm

During this time, youth meet with staff on Zoom to participate in youth-led, adult-supported workshops. Youth can suggest and/or host their own activities. The link can be found here

Thursdays: Peer Support & Community Connections | 2-4 pm
This is the same as Mondays’ programming but held for a shorter period of time and may be hosted by a different staff member. It also meets on Zoom and the link can be found here.

    Discord

During the periods where there is no programming, youth can turn to Discord for additional peer support, access to resources, and the opportunity to meet other participants. Staff are often online and available for assistance. The link can be found here.

The staff person to contact about programming and enrollment is Dan Lionheart, our LGBTQIA+ Specialist and their email is tlionheart@communityaction.us.

  • The Environmental Action Club has partnered with Tree-Plenish to plant trees in the Amherst regional community to offset our school’s yearly paper consumption. Buy trees for yourself or as a gift at www.tree-plenishevents.org/amherst! The deadline for ordering trees is March 24, trees cost $5 each, and we are offering red oak, red maple, and river birch saplings. We are hoping to meet our goal of 230 trees, so tell all your friends! You can also sign up to volunteer for our planting event on April 24 at the website above.
