  • Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu is a Chinese-American physicist who is often regarded as the “First Lady of Physics” and the “Queen of Nuclear Research” for her work in the field of nuclear physics. She was born on May 31, 1912, in a small town near Shanghai, China. Although it was uncommon for many girls at the time, Wu attended a school started by her father, and in 1934, she graduated at the top of her class with a degree in physics from National Central University, in Nanjing, China. In 1936, she immigrated to the U.S. and received her Ph.D from UC Berkeley. She briefly taught at Smith College and Princeton University before she accepted a position at Columbia University and joined the Manhattan Project. Wu earned many accolades for her discoveries and contributions, such as confirming Enrico Fermi’s beta decay theory and disproving the law of conservation of parity for beta decay. Outside of her research, she advocated for gender equality in the science fields, and today, she remains an inspiration for young women and Asian-Americans. -Written by Elaine Wu for the International Students Club AAPI Heritage Month Celebration
