  • May is Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Each morning, the International Students Club will be highlighting a different Asian-American or Pacific Islander to celebrate the contributions AAPI people make every day to our country and world.

Naomi Osaka is the first Asian tennis player to hold top ranking in singles and is the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam title. She was born October 16, 1997, in Osaka City, Japan, to a Haitian father and a Japanese mother. When she was three, her family moved to the US and she began playing tennis. Her father was especially encouraging in her effort to become an elite player, coaching and helping her train every day. Naomi was only sixteen when she turned pro in 2013, and in 2016, she was selected as "Newcomer of the Year" by the Women's Tennis Association. Osaka then triumphed at the U.S. Open in September 2018, making her the first Japanese player to nab a Grand Slam title. Osaka scored her second grand slam title at the Australian Open in 2019 and became the first Asian across genders to briefly hold the No 1 spot.

I’m hoping to publish a senior athletic showcase section in the newsletter at the end of this year. I am looking for student-athletes who plan to attend college next year and continue to participate in athletics. If you are one of them, can you please send me what school you are attending next year, along with your major and an action photo of you playing that sport that would be great. Please send information and photos to Ms. Stewart's email. Stewartv@arps.org
