  • Stacey Yvonne Abrams was born on December 9, 1973 to Robert and Carolyn Abrams. She grew up in Mississippi. Abrams is an American politician, lawyer, voting rights activist, author and businesswoman. While in high school, she was hired as a typist for a congressional campaign, and at 17, she was hired as a speechwriter based on the edits she’d made while typing! She was also  her high school’s valedictorian. Abrams served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017. She ran for governor in 2018, but lost by 50,000 votes. Her opponent, Brian Kent, was also Secretary of State - the office that in 2017 alone, canceled nearly 700,000 voter registrations - mostly belonging to minority voters. Kemp oversaw these eight months after declaring that he was running for governor. Abrams responded by creating Fair Fight Action, an organization to address voter suppression. Her efforts have been widely credited with boosting voter turnout in Georgia in 2020 by over 800,000 new voter registrations. You can see a documentary about her work, “All In: The Fight for Democracy” in Prime Video.
