  • In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, POCU honors the many contributions of Indigenous Peoples:

Jim Thorpe was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation and was born in 1887. He was educated at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, a government sponsored school that was devoted to the forced cultural assimilation of Native American children. He competed in track & field, football, baseball, lacrosse and ballroom dancing where he won the 1912 intercollegiate ballroom dancing championship.  He was also a two-time All American in football for the school.

Jim Thorpe was the first Native American to win a gold medal for the USA in the Olympics, winning 2, in the decathlon and the pentathlon events. However, the Olympic Committee stripped him of his medals when they found out he had played semi-professional baseball for 2 seasons which went against the amateur status for Olympians, although several other Olympians had also held jobs as professional athletes without sanctions. It is believed that Jim Thorpe's medals were stripped due to racism. Finally, after efforts by many, in 1982, the Olympic Committee approved Thorpe's reinstatement into the record books.

Thorpe was the first president of the American Professional Football Association which became the National Football League. He played 6 seasons in Major League Baseball, several years in the National Football League and played professional basketball. He played professional sports until he was 41. Jim Thorpe was 73 when he died in 2011.

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, POCU honors the many contributions of Indigenous Peoples:

Maria Tallchief was an American ballerina from Fairfax, OK. She was born on Jan. 24th, 1925 and died on April 11th, 2013 in Chicago. She had one child. At age 17 she moved to New York City to pursue being a ballerina. She applied to many dance companies looking for work but she was not given the opportunity due to racism against her Native American ancestry. The rejection did not stop her from following her dream. In 1942, she was accepted into the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Maria Tallchief was the first of Oklahoma’s Osage Tribe to become a prima ballerina in 1946 and she became the first American to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet. After she retired she co-founded the Chicago City Ballet and continued to speak out against discrimination against Native Americans.   By: Nipuni, Jocelyn and Nandi

  • Calling all High School Seniors who are January graduates and may be interested in a post-secondary career in the medical field. GCC is currently offering a CNA training program starting in January 2022, for high school seniors that would like to enter the medical workforce right after graduation.
This 5-week training course is ideal for students who may be graduating early or only need a few elective credits to meet graduation requirements and could possibly take this certification course as an ALPs.

Once this training is completed, students will be Certified Nursing Assistants and will be eligible to work in various medical settings such as hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and at individual homes as an in-home health aid.

This is a great way to get your foot in the door if you are interested in the medical field and if you're looking to work immediately after graduation. This is also a great way to start a nursing career if you are interested in working in the field before committing to a two- or four-year program

The best part? It is 100% FREE!!!!

If you would like more information please reach out to Deidre Cuffee-Gray or Erin Edinson: cuffee-grayd@arps.org , edinsone1@arps.org .
