    • Today's Fact-                                                                                                    Chile celebrates their independence on September 18th.
    • José Martí was an influential Cuban activist and poet born January 28 1853. He grew up in an impoverished family and was educated at the Secondary School of Havana under Rafel Maria de Mendive. Much of Jose’s actions were driven by the movement to separate Cuba from Spain’s rule. At sixteen he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for writing separatist poems but he was deported to Spain a year in. He reunited with his family in Mexico but always had a dream to return to Cuba. Jose ended up dying on the battlefield fighting for Cuban independence.  José Martí and Rafael Serra founded “La Liga”, an organization dedicated to Cuban independence. He also assisted with Cuba’s economy and warned against American imperialism. Jose once said, “Exclusive wealth is unjust. A nation with small landowners is rich. A country with a few rich men is not rich-only the country where everyone possesses a little of the wealth is rich.” Submitted by Genevieve Lagrant
  • It's Wellness Wednesday!
This week our Wellness Wednesday Tip is: Prioritize your sleep each night.
Our sleep patterns can change during stressful times or big changes. Everyone goes through periods where sleep is difficult to achieve. During these times, you may find yourself staying up late, feeling groggy during the day, or even find yourself constantly waking up during the night. Getting enough sleep helps us think more clearly, improves our mood and our memory, and decreases stress and anxiety. Sleep helps to repair tissues throughout the body and helps to strengthen our immune system. Here are some ways to improve your sleep: Maintain a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, including non-school nights. Keep a consistent bedtime routine by doing less stimulating activities such as taking a shower, journaling, or listening to calm music.  Lastly, incorporate exercise and/or spending time outside into your daily routine. These will help you fall asleep more easily and sleep more deeply.
  • Picture Day is Tuesday, September 28th. The forms will be distributed during Advisory on September 23rd. You can prepay for pictures at www.grynnternet.com. Enter code 3A7W5P4 and click login. If you pay online there is no need to submit anything to the school. Please contact the Main Office, arhsoffice@arps.org, if you have questions. Thanks and take care.

  • The Amherst Current, a new blog and website focusing on local issues (theamherstcurrent.org), invites students to submit posts.  Students do not need to live in Amherst, but the post must be about Amherst in some respect.

Our posts are typically 750-900 words and written in a conversational style.  Topics could include: How well does Amherst serve the needs of teenagers?  What do teens wish Amherst offered? If you are familiar with the proposed expansion plan for the Jones Library, what are your thoughts? Is the Jones Library, as it is now, an appealing place for teens? What do teens know, or not know, about how our local government works? Is this something you are curious about? What issues are not getting enough attention, and what can Amherst do about them?

We'd love to elevate the voices of young people! Students should feel free to contact Sarah Marshall, or Nick Grabbe, at theamherstcurrent@gmail.com and share their thoughts. Please contact them before drafting a post, as not all topics are suitable for their blog.
